What should I optimize first?
Optimize your homepage and best gallery first. WordPress users should create a First Impression post, Landing Page post, and resource posts. Then quickly proceed to the link building activities in order to increase your popularity across the web.
How long does it take to rank after I make changes?
If you change things on your site, like a title or an image, Google will update your rank the next time it visits your site, typically once a week. These on-site changes will have a minor effect in search. So if your rank didn’t change to as much as you hoped, focus on building links. Every time you get a new link, Google will update your rank when it sees that link.
Am I more likely to rank if I advertise with Google?
No. Google’s 2004 Founders Letter made clear that “we do not accept payment for [our search results] or for inclusion or more frequent updating.”
Can I just outsource SEO?
There are two must-have ingredients for ranking in search: creating great pages and getting links from across the web, whether it be contributing articles, winning awards or speaking at events. These activities are tough to outsource and I don’t recommend trying. Outsourcing SEO can result in bad articles with your name on them and lots of low quality links directed to your website. It hurts you in the long run and is very difficult to correct.
Are some website templates better than others for SEO?
All WordPress.org sites are pretty much the same; you can choose any theme. Blog sites tend to perform much better in search results than traditional website templates. I recommend ProPhoto blog themes at pro.photo.
How do I know if my site has been hacked?
In Google Search Console navigate to Security Issues. I suggest getting a site security checker from your website host. These cost less than $100 a year, and will notify you and help resolve hacker issues.
Does getting links from social sites help my rank?
Not so much, yet. A photographer with 50,000 Likes and thousands of links across social media might rank higher than a competitor if all other things are equal. But for most photographers, social is better used for general branding and awareness than SEO.
Does linking to other sites help SEO?
Not really. It puts you in good company to link out to quality websites, but the link helps them rank better.
What is a nofollow link?
Webmasters can add a nofollow tag to a link to tell search engines not to count it. For example, Wikipedia uses nofollow in order to discourage people from trying to link to themselves for SEO purposes.
